Press Release - 9th November 2010

During a presentation ceremony at the Royal Aeronautical Society the President of the Society, AVM David Couzens, accepted a copy of the brand new Encyclopedia of Aerospace Engineering. The presentation took place at the Society’s London headquarters, No 4 Hamilton Place on 3rd November. Many Members of the Royal Aeronautical Society have contributed to the Encyclopedia, which represents a major publishing initiative to establish a high quality, print and online reference work that will enhance education, training and research in this complex and demanding field.

Published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd the Encyclopedia of Aerospace Engineering is the first largescale reference work to address the entire range of engineering and scientific principles of air and spacecraft design, construction and operation. In nine themed volumes it provides an unparalleled exposition of essential scientific concepts and their application to current engineering practice, laying a foundation for further research and study in specialist information sources. Extensive cross-referencing and online updating will ensure its unique, ongoing contribution to the engineering literature.

In recognition of the Society’s endorsement of, and contribution to, the Encyclopedia AVM David Couzens was presented with a copy for the Society’s National Aerospace Library. AVM Couzens commented “I am particularly impressed with the depth of research and information contained in the Encyclopedia. Many Society members have been able to contribute on a wide range of subjects making this Encyclopedia an invaluable and comprehensive reference source. The Society, along with our colleagues from the AIAA, are proud to have been associated with this endeavour.”

Press Release - 23rd September 2010

The Royal Aeronautical Society is launching a challenge to young people in the United Kingdom that will give them the chance to meet British born NASA Astronaut, Dr Piers Sellers. The challenge is for the young people to explain how space exploration has inspired them. The winners will have the opportunity to share their story and be further inspired by meeting with Dr Piers Sellers, NASA Astronaut and veteran of three Shuttle Missions.

To widen the challenge as much as possible it has been split into three different age categories.

• In the group from 8 to10 years of age, the pupils are being challenged to submit a question they would like to ask an Astronaut.
• In the age group 11 to 14 the challenge is the pupils to write 300 words, or make a 3 minute video, about a space related event or achievement that has they have found inspirational.
• Finally in the age category 15 to 18 the challenge is to submit a longer written submission (500 words+) or a longer video (up to 4 minutes).

All entries will need to be submitted to the Royal Aeronautical Society for judging and the winners will subsequently be notified they will be meeting with Dr Sellers at the Society’s London headquarters, No 4 Hamilton Place. All entrants will receive complimentary student Membership of the Royal Aeronautical Society.

Dr Sellers will deliver the prestigious 2010 Wilbur and Orville Wright Lecture at the Royal Aeronautical Society on December 9th, 2010. The 3 contest winners, each aged 8-11, 12- 14 or 15-18 will be given the opportunity to meet and speak with Dr Sellers for half an hour immediately before the lecture. The Challenge has been devised to encourage school pupils in the United Kingdom to become involved in space exploration and to promote the career opportunities in the aerospace sector and associated disciplines.

Dame Deirdre Hutton, the first woman to chair the Civil Aviation Authority, is to be the Keynote Speaker at the Royal Aeronautical Society’s 4th Women in Aviation and Aerospace Conference on Friday October 15. Since taking up her post last August, Dame Deirdre and her team have had to deal with one of the most serious problems to hit the entire aviation industry – the closure of British airspace as a result of volcanic ash drifting over the country from Iceland. Bill Read, the Features Editor of the Royal Aeronautical Society’s flagship publication Aerospace International, has received two nominations for the prestigious Aerospace Journalist of the Year Awards. The Awards takes place annually and hundreds of articles are submitted, so to be nominated for two awards is quite an achievement. The Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) is keenly anticipating the lift off of the final flight of the Space Shuttle Atlantis, which is set to launch on 14th May. The reason for the anticipation is because British-born astronaut Dr Piers Sellers is taking the travelling medal of the President of the Royal Aeronautical Society on board. The President’s travelling medal is a lighter weight version of the Presidents official medal of office, normally the President carries the travelling medal when visiting the extensive network of branches of the Royal Aeronautical Society. The Royal Aeronautical Society was honoured when HRH Lt Gen Abdulrahman bin Fahad Al-Faisal, Commander Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) visited the Society’s London headquarters, No 4 Hamilton Place.  As part of his visit HRH LT Gen Fahad Al-Faisal presented a painting of an English Electric Lightning to Dr Mike Steeden, President of the Royal Aeronautical Society, in celebration of the strengthening bond between the Royal Saudi Air Force and the Society. The Royal Aeronautical Society’s (RAeS) annual conference concluded yesterday. The final presentations highlighted the contrast between the enormous potential for future wealth creation, exports and high-tech employment that could be generated in the UK aerospace sector with the warning that this could be put at risk if an incoming government ignored the need to adopt a more strategic investment agenda. The conference speakers, representing leading global businesses, academic institutions and aviation and defence organisations, provided a wide ranging series of presentations and Q&A sessions. The topics discussed stretched from the recent air travel crisis caused by volcanic ash to future prospects for safer and more environmentally friendly air traffic management, air finance, the expanding prospects for British involvement in space access and the changing needs and threats in defence.
